what is today?

ask me what today is? before this summer who knew harry potter celebrated a birthday! before this summer harry potter was something rarely, if ever mentioned in our house.

we are a family of readers and we all have very unique taste.  bennett devours books at marathon speed. he reads pretty much anything!  he read the harry potter series and was strangely unimpressed. jeff, the biggest reader of us all, rarely if ever reads fiction. anna katherine reads and re-reads when she studies. however, she begins dreading her summer reading in january. i read daily, but at a snails pace.

mary claire rivals her brother with her love of reading. about a year ago she began asking to red the series. "all my friends are doing it." (have they not learned that the "everyone is doing it" statement gets them nowhere?!)

i was hesitant about this series. i feel like it deals with some dangerous topics.  topics i do to want them to become desensitized to.

 i began prayerfully researching.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-7)

jeff and i felt she had "the ability and maturity to distinguish between reality and fantasy, right and wrong, or good and evil." we talked to mary claire a lot about God's view on witches, the occult, fortune tellers, evil... i learned so much myself!

an article i came across i felt said it best, "

Christian parents have the responsibility to teach their children about virtues that please God and about the spiritual forces that we are up against (Ephesians 6:12). When a child gets to a point where he or she has a personal relationship with God and is able to fully discern between what is good and bad according to God’s standards, a parent-led discussion of the Harry Potter books and movies might serve as a way to teach godly discernment and raise up wise Christian thinkers.

so this summer we bought her the series. she has devoured these books. she was so sad when she reached the final book.
but no worry. J.K. Rowling seems far from finished. there's just as many prequels, equals, screen play, additions... marketing GENIUS!
so happy birthday harry potter!
we made you a batch of chocolate covered wands to celebrate!
